  • The purpose of this book is to examine the concept of risk from a perspective of biological vulnerability induced by prenatal exposure to alcohol and drugs and to explore how physical or emotional environmental stress can prey on that vulnerability to shape the child´s future. To the observer, a child´s history may be a mere record of events. But to the child, it is a life stored in memories, either known or unknown, recognized or not. Memories of early trauma or neglect can emerge at any time, driving the child´s relationships, development, and achievment. While the dance of attunement may continue, if missteps are not addressed at the earliest stages of development, the cost of performance may be greater than the child can afford. (From the preface)
