  • The aim of the thesis was to assess the health effects of misuse of alcohol and cannabis among young men, taking into account social and personal background factors. The study is based on data from a nation-wide survey of young Swedish males who were conscripted for compulsory military service in 1969-70. The results indicate significantly increased mortality and psychiatric morbidity among young male excessive users of alcohol and a significantly increased risk for schizophrenia among frequent misusers of cannabis. Although several of the background factors in themselves are risk factors for both mortality and morbidity, a strong case can be made regarding the effects of substance misuse on health in this cohort of young men. The results also indicate important benefits of abstention from alcohol up till the age of conscription.
