  • Epidemiology of infections in intravenous drug abusers. Host defense mechanisms in intravenous drug abusers. Role of the clinical microbiology and immunology laboratory in the diagnosis and treatment of infections in drug abusers. Infection control strategies for managing intravenous drug abusers. Psychiatric aspects in the management of the hospitalized intravenous drug abuser. Emergency department evaluation of the febrile intravenous drug abuser. Radiologic study of intravenous drug abuse complications. Central nervous system infections in intravenous drug abusers. Ocular manifestations of intravenous drug abuse. Skin and soft tissue infections, pulmonary infection, and infectious endocarditis in intravenous drug abusers. Liver disease associated with intravenous drug abuse. Skeletal infections among intravenous drug abusers. Mycotic aneurysms in intravenous drug abusers. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in intravenous drug abusers. This book is divided into two sections, one addressing the general concepts we deem appropriate for management of infection among drug users and the other detailing the specific diseases one may encounter. The first section contains chapters on the epidemiology of drug abuse and its related infections, the immunology of addicted individuals, the techniques required in the microbiology laboratory when managing such patients, and finally the management of the addict as a patient, with attention to infection control concerns and the psychological aspect of effectively delivering care in the hospital setting. The remainder of the book contains chapters devoted to the specific infectious entities and complications, which are grouped primarily according to the organ systems involved.
