*520  $aHeart-related death is overrepresented in alcoholics. The objective of this study was to elucidate its contribution to the overall mortality and its underlying mechanisms. Ischaemic heart disease, often clinically undiscovered, contributes significantly to the excess mortality in alcoholic men, and coronary death may be related to sympathosdrenergic activation during withdrawal. An increased heart vulnerability seems to persist a considerable time after detoxification.
