  • This report reviews current approaches to health promotion in the workplace aimed at preventing and controlling alcohol and drug-related problems and at mitigating their serious social and economic consequences in both industrialized and developing countries. Taking account of the wide range of biological, psychological, social and environmental factors that can contribute to such problems in different work settings, from large multinational enterprises to single homes, the report evaluates both older programmes and new initiatives applicable at national, community and enterprise levels. While identifying specific concerns, such as the implications of drug screening, the regulatory context of drug and alcohol control, and the special requirements of developing countries, the report draw attention to the universal applicability of the health promotion concept to alcohol and drug related problems. It stresses the importance of collecting basic data on needs before any workplace programme is launched, training the personnel who will be responsible and ensuring continuous evaluation of progress and outcome. Particular emphasis is placed on workers' participation in programme development and implementation and on information dissemination and education.
