  • Pubs and restaurants are important areas of sociability. In the past few decades the pub and restaurant culture has expanded in the Nordic countries. The going-out scenes in the urban areas have become more diversified as new places have been designed and opened with a particular view to attracting young adults, who represent the biggest group of pub and restaurant customers today. In this volume pub and restaurant life is studied from different angles. The articles discuss the social history of public drinking in the Nordic countries; they show how pubs and restaurants have been represented in the media in Norway and in Sweden and they give insights into young adults' public drinking situations, habits and cultures in the biggest Nordic cities. Other questions deal with the effectiveness of local alcohol prevention programmes focused on public drinking situations in Denmark, Finland and Sweden and how public drinking is associated with violence in Iceland.
