  • In the present study, the biogenic aldehydes derived from tryptamine and serotonin were found to disappear when they were incubated with rat-brain tissue. Another series of experiements in vitro showed that the aldehydes derived from tryptamine inhibited tryptophan hydroxylase, which is the rate limiting enzyme in the synthesis of serotonin. In order to evaluate the role of biogenic aldehydes in vivo, two aldehyde-dehydrogenase inhibitors - disulphiram and coprine - were compared with respect to their actions on hexobarbital-anaesthesia time and serotonin metabolism in rats.
