  • The present investigation was carried out in order to study mechanisms behind toxic effects of ethanol on the liver. Methods were developed for quantitative analysis of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle aids, related acids and aldehydes. The methods were based on isolation by anion-exchange chromatography and solvent extraction, derivatization and analysis by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Ethanol labelled with stable isotopes was used to study the oxidation by different enzyme systems.
