  • Chapter 1 introduces the student to the breadth and depth of the country's drug abuse problem. Chapter 2 presents and explains the factors that influence drug use, misuse, and abuse. Chapter 3 describes, in a clear and straightforward way, the structure and function of the nervous system. Chapter 4 presents the basics of pharmacology necessary to understand drug action. Chapters 5 and 6 introduce two categories of drugs most familiar to the student: the over-the-counter drugs and the prescription drugs. Chapters 7 and 8 present the legal psychoactive drugs: nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol. The chapters that follow concentrate on controlled substances including depressants, stimulants, narcotics, marijuana, and the hallucinogens. Both cocaine and marijuana are presented in their own separate chapters. The final chapter, presents a four-component overview of drug abuse prevention: education, testing, treatment, and enforcement.
