  • From the contents: Development of the diagnostic interview schedule. Contributions of anthropology and sociology to alcohol epidemiology. Cross-cultural research on alcohol. Recent advances in the investigation of the epidemiology of alcohol abuse and addiction. Reports from each of the ten countries or cultural regions that participated in the effort. Comparative analysis of alcoholism in ten cultural regions: the authors discuss the very important question of the appropriateness of applying a set of diagnostic criteria (the DSM-II) developed in the United States to a wide variety of cultural contexts, particularly for the study alcoholism, an illness that is likely to be strongly influenced by cultural context. The authors attempt to summarize the results from the surveys to see what this effort teaches about biological, social, and cultural influences in alcoholism and about future prospects in the field of cross-cultural psychiatric epidemiology.
