Anmärkning: Innehållsbeskrivning, sammanfattning The offspring of 82 women with heavy alcohol exposure - over 10 drinks per week or over 45 drinks per month - of various durations were examined 1 to 5 times during their first three postnatal years in order to examine the effect of reduction of heavy alcohol consumption during pregnancy on development , pre- and postnatal growth and morphogenesis. The number of children failing in the used development al tests increased from 18 per cent at the 4 month assessment to 60 per cent at the 27 month assessment. No single sign observed in infancy could predict poor later outcome but high scores of abnormal neurological signs, facial features suggestive of FAS and retarded pre- or postnatal growth predicted poor later outcome. The need for long-term follow-up and repeated development al assessments is evident. The number of children with FAS was 10 and FAE 19, the ratio being 1:1.9. The crucial criteria for the diagnosis for FAS was the correct diagnosis of craniofacial features. The FAE diagnosis was dependent on fulfilling the criteria for growth retardation and CNS dysfunction.
