  • At the time this study was initiated three enzymes were known to be members of the short-chain dehydrogenase family: Drosphilia alcohol dehydrogenase, Bacillus glucose dehydrogenase and Klebsiella ribitol dehydrogenase. It was believed that enzymes involved in prostaglandin and steroid metabolism also could belong to this group. 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase was therefore purified from human placenta and the primary structures of that enzyme and a bacterial 3 alpha/20 beta-hydroxyst dehydrogenase were determined and indeed shown to be homologous to the short-chaindehydrogenases. During this work, several related sequences were reported and the enzyme family grew rapidly.
