*520  $aThis thesis attempts to describe the relationship between mental illness and substance abuse. Substance abuse among patients suffering from psychosis (dual diagnosis) has been of special interest. The purpose has been to reveal the characteristics of this group in order to formulate the premises for a discussion about the planning of treatment to be offered. The thesis consists of five studies describing mental illness and substance abuse. The study as a whole showed that especially younger, single men were representative for the dual-diagnosis group. Many were without housing and suffer from failure on the part of their families and the psychiatric treatment system to care for them.
