  • The issue is tentatively divided into three parts by time period. In the first part, topics include ancient Egyptian beer production and drinking customs; hypotheses concerning the possible etiology of drinking norms in European antiquity; and the relationship of alcohol, social class, and work in the middle ages. In the second part, dealing primarily with the nineteenth century, papers concerning the disappearance of absinthe drinking and hypotheses concerning the origins of the double standard concerning Canadian women in regards to drinking are presented. In the third part, dealing with contemporary times, an examination is made of trends in alcohol consumption in Iowa after law changes, generational change in Bolivian drinking norms, and the ways in which proverbs may reflect drinking cultures.
