  • The task of this study was to assess some of the perhaps most central endocrine effects of moderate ethanol intake in volunteers. To this end, a randomized, double blind, cross-over study design was set up with nine healthy volunteers consuming 0, 0.5 and 1.0 grams of ethanol/kg body weight (kg bw) with one-week intervals. After this series of experiments a TRH stimulation test was carried out with six healthy vounteers using ethanol doses of 0 and 1.0 g/kg bw. In conclusion, ethanol intake was found to cause several significant changes in human nocturnal endocrinology, especially in the secretion of melatonin (MT), noradrenaline (NA), growth hormone (GH), thyrotropin (TSH), insulin and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1). The ethanol-induced changes in nocturnal hormone secretion observed in these experiments evidently indicate a cause-effect relationship to the brain mechanisms monitoring sleep, bodily rhythms, stress reactions and metabolism.
