  • The monograph begins with chapters on the relationship between scientific prevalence estimates and policy since, prevalence estimation takes place within a political context. It then deals with casefinding methods, not because they provide a prevalence estimate in themselvs, but because they are a basis for many of the more reliable estimation methods and because discussing them raises key issues of case definition, double-counting and data quality. The following tree sections deal with the methods most commonly used in Europe. The first of these is capture-recapture, which directly uses data collected through techniques such as case-finding. The subsequent two sections two sections deal with other single-method approaches to prevalence estimation: multiplier methods and nomination techniques. The final section of the monograph is concerned with combining and comparing different estimation methods.
