*520  $aThis study presents experiments that have been designed to examine the effects of ethanol on expression of fos and jun genes in neuronal cells. The human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line was used as an experimental model system. This cell line has been extensively studied previously with regard to neurotransmitter-mediated signaling. In particular, the effects of acute and chronic ethanol exposure on the basal as well as on muscarine receptor- and protein kinase C- (PKC) stimulated expressions of fos and jun genes were investigated.
