  • Chapter 1 sets out the main ways in which family members affected by relatives' drinking or drug problems have been understood in the professional and academic writings on the subject - what the authors call 'models of understanding'. Chapter 2 reviews other research which, like the research reported here, tried to gain a greater understanding of what it is like to be a family member concerned about and affected by a close relative's problem drinking or drug taking, using qualitative methods of investigation. Chapter 3 provides another, and most important, part of the context for the research, namely, a brief description of the tree socio-cultural groups involved in the research, plus information about what is known about the consumption of alcohol and other drugs by those groups. Details of the design and methods of that research are to be found in chapter 4. The results are to be found in chapter 5, 6 and 7, which deal, respectively, with the impact of problem drinking or drug use on family members (stressors and strain), the ways family members respond (coping), and the support they receive from others (social support). Chapter 8 focuses on the ways in which experiences in the three groups contrast one with another. Chapter 9 looks at implications for our ways of understanding family members' experiences, and chapter 10 the implications for professional intervention and prevention. (From the preface)
